Initial concept art for Bossman/The Rat King by Heiko Hentschel. Co-director Florian Westermann explains, “We needed to come up with a way to show and animate him in the movie. Our screenwriter, Terry Rossio, made the decision to give the Rat King a mysterious physical presence, this disguise made of a pile of rats in a trench coat. It was a very smart decision, because it works better for the audience. A voice in people’s heads would be too scary and too abstract for younger kids to understand.”
